Mattress Care For A Good Night's Sleep

A quality mattress should last for many years, and you can ensure that your mattress stays in good condition by following a few simple maintenance tips. When you properly clean and care for your mattress, it can provide you with a great night's sleep and good care will also help protect your investment. Here are some helpful suggestions to ensure that you prolong the life of your mattress.

Flipping And Rotation

You should rotate your mattresses from the foot end to the head end every few months to ensure consistent wear. This will also prevent dips in the mattress caused by your body putting pressure on the same spots every night. To rotate the mattress, move the part near the headboard towards the foot of the bed until it completely spins around. Then, be sure it is properly aligned with the box spring. Some mattresses can also be flipped completely over if they are double sided. You should flip your mattress completely over every few months to help maintain consistent wear.

Cleaning

A simple vacuuming of the surface of your mattress should be done every time you wash your sheets. This will remove skin flakes, dust, and dust mites and keep it clean. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to prevent any damage to the surface of your mattress. When it comes to stains, they can be removed by using a solution of dish detergent and water, or you can purchase upholstery cleaners that can help get stains out easily. Just be sure the area you clean is completely dry before placing the sheets back on the mattress. A good way to prevent stains from the beginning is to use a removable mattress cover that can be put in the wash from time to time.

Preventative Maintenance

There are a few things you can do proactively to help prolong the life of your mattress. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Do not allow children to jump or bounce on the bed.
  • In order to keep your bedding and mattress clean, don't let your pets share the bed with you.
  • Keep your bedroom temperature as cool as possible since dust mites thrive and multiply in warmer temperatures.
  • Wash sheets, pillowcases, mattress covers, and duvets at least every few weeks using the hot water cycle in your washing machine.
  • Don't have plants in the bedroom, since they can attract pests and encourage the growth of dust mites.
